Ubuntu 24.04 new install, Gnome X11
Noticed lately that right after turning on the pc in the morning, Ubuntu lost internet (the icon on the panel shows normal but when I try to use browser, it does not connect). Thought firstly it was my router, but it’s not (confirmed with WiFi, which works). After reboot network starts working. How can I troubleshoot what’s causing the problem or if it’s hardware problem (loose cable/connector)? My estimate is 20-30% of time I have to reboot to get network back.
Hello please post the specs for your machine you’re using so we know what you’re working with
Are you using a Ethernet connection or WiFi connection
is this a new installation? sometimes it best to just do a fresh install maybe something got screwed on the first installation
My next question would be, is this the only machine you have that’s giving you this issue? if the machine is really old it maybe a issue
Perhaps your machine is connected to the internet but can’t resolve host names to IP addresses. That might be the reason why the icon in panel shows normal connection while the browser can’t open websites. Your DNS settings might be screwed up.
In case of DNS problems you might refer to Resolving Sudden DNS Issues.
It’s ethernet, I’m just using WiFi to confirm that the internet is working.
No, it’s not new install. I’ve been using it for few months now, unfortunately this is my only machine. I bought a couple of years ago.
That might be the issue, just changed to nextDNS, since I posted the problem, the problem did no come up again.
Hopefully that fixed the connection issue changing the DNS
